Happy birthday, Efteling!

Hip hip hooray, it's Efteling's birthday! On 31 May 1952 the Fairytale Forest opened its gates for the very first time. Since then, the park has grown from a fairytale walking trail into a complete resort with roller coasters, dark rides, hotels and holiday parks.

1952-1960: The opening of the Fairytale Forest

Efteling started life as a fairytale park. Under the direction of designer Anton Pieck, well-known fairy tales were given a home in the Fairytale Forest. Visitors strolled past iconic scenes such as Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, The Frog King and The Chinese Nightingale.

Thanks to its recognisable style, fairytale atmosphere and remarkable details, the Fairytale Forest quickly became a much-loved destination for families.

1960-1980: From fairytale park to theme park

After the success of the Fairytale Forest, Efteling kept on developing. During this period, more and more attractions and experiences were added, making the park much more than just a place to see fairy tales.

A well-known example from this period is the Indische Waterlelies, which opened in 1966. This enchanting show perfectly demonstrated what Efteling did best: telling stories through music, movement and a magical atmosphere.

1980-2000: Big attractions put Efteling on the map

In the 1980s and 1990s Efteling grew into a true theme park. With the addition of bigger attractions, the park built an ever stronger reputation in the theme park world.

In 1981 Python opened, Efteling's first big roller coaster. Two years later came Piraña, and in 1986 Fata Morgana opened its doors. These attractions meant Efteling became known not just for fairy tales, but also for thrills, adventure and grand themed areas.

It was during this period that the mix that still makes Efteling so recognisable today really took shape: fairy tales, stories, thrills and attractions for all ages.

2000-2020: Efteling grows into a resort

After 2000 Efteling kept on innovating. The park focused increasingly on large, story-driven attractions and also greatly expanded its overnight accommodation options.

In 2007 De Vliegende Hollander opened, followed by Joris en de Draak in 2010 and Baron 1898 in 2015. These attractions combine thrills with elaborate theming and a clear storyline.

Efteling kept growing beyond the park gates too. With the opening of Efteling Bosrijk in 2009 and Efteling Loonsche Land in 2017, it became ever easier to turn a day at Efteling into a stay of several days.

In 2017 Symbolica opened, one of the largest and most expensive attractions in the park's history. It gave Efteling another major dark ride where imagination, technology and storytelling come together.

2020-now: Renewal, sustainability and new attractions

Efteling hasn't stood still in recent years either. In 2020 Max & Moritz opened, a dual family coaster on the site of the former Bob. 2024 saw the arrival of Danse Macabre, a major new attraction in the Huyverwoud themed area.

On top of that, Efteling continues to invest in new places to eat and drink, accommodation and improvements around the park. In 2022 Efteling celebrated its 70th anniversary with, among other things, the temporary attraction Efteling Wonderland on the Speelweide.

Sustainability is also playing an ever bigger role. For example, solar panels have been installed on the roof of Symbolica, and the park is working on reducing residual waste. Efteling aims to be climate neutral by 2030.

Efteling keeps on moving

In 74 years, Efteling has changed from a fairytale forest in Kaatsheuvel into a complete resort with attractions, hotels, holiday parks and millions of visitors a year. Yet the heart of it has always stayed the same: taking visitors into a world full of stories, wonder and imagination.

And that's exactly what still makes Efteling so special after all these years. Happy birthday, Efteling!
